WHAT IS ACTIVE ADULT?

Traditionally, 55+ living has been associated with nursing homes, assisted living, and other forms of long-term care. However, with a welcome shift in the 55+ housing mindset, active adult communities aim to challenge this stereotype and offer a new way of thinking about 55+ living. Instead of focusing on the limitations and sacrifices of aging, active adult communities emphasize the opportunities and possibilities that this season of life may bring.

But what exactly is an active adult community? Defined simply, it is a residential community designed specifically with older adults in mind, typically aged 55 and better. Active adult communities typically offer a range of amenities and activities that cater to the needs and interests of their residents, including packed activity calendars, engaging social clubs, unique amenities and so much more.  By reframing the way we think about senior living (say goodbye to the 4pm dinner lineup), active adult communities are helping to change the narrative around aging. Rather than viewing 55+ living through the lens of sacrifice, these communities highlight the potential this season of life may bring. They provide a space where residents can continue to thrive while surrounded by like-minded peers who share their interests and passions.

WHY ACTIVE ADULT?

Social Engagement
Perhaps the biggest benefit of active adult communities is the social aspect. Loneliness and social isolation are issues that plague older adults, with studies showing that social isolation can lead to many negative health outcomes, including depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. As noted in a study cited by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, social isolation significantly increases a person’s risk of premature death from all causes, a risk that “may rival those of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity.” And as we age, the opportunity to form organic connections with relatable peers becomes less likely. Active adult communities provide a built-in social network, with opportunities for residents to connect with others through shared interests and activities.

Convenience
Although Active Adult communities strive to create an atmosphere far from stereotypical senior living, it is important to acknowledge the need for convenience-based services within our communities. The natural progression of aging often creates a ripple effect, resulting in periods of isolation and a likely decline in quality of life. The addition of convenience-based services, such as shuttles to area attractions and medical appointments, 24-hour maintenance and more, allows for residents to maintain a high level of independence and overall satisfaction.

Lifestyle
Unlike many multi-family options, Active Adult communities are designed with a specific resident in mind, allowing for the ideal backdrop for a vacation everyday lifestyle. Day time activities, tailored classes and instruction, targeted amenities and more, coupled with a choice-based system allow for residents to truly feel engaged and at home.
